What it is
The suburb takes its name from a battery of guns set up on the point in the early 19th century to defend the harbour. Mariners, merchants and tradespeople settled on the slope above the docks, and much of their housing survives: small stone and timber cottages, terraces and a few grander villas, along with old pubs and churches such as St George's Anglican Church.
The heart of the area is Arthur Circus, a ring of Georgian cottages around a small green. Walking up Kelly's Steps from Salamanca Place and wandering the lanes is the best way to see it.
Getting there by bus
Battery Point sits between the waterfront and Sandy Bay Rd, and most visitors simply walk up from Salamanca Place. By bus, routes 401, 402, 422 and 426–429 run along Sandy Bay Rd, with stops at Hampden Rd and at Albuera Street Primary School, around 450 metres from Arthur Circus.
From there, Hampden Road leads straight into the historic streets, and the walk back down to the city centre via Salamanca Place takes about a quarter of an hour.
