What it is
Established in 1818, the gardens are among the oldest in Australia. Their lawns, old trees and convict-built brick walls frame a series of themed collections, including a Japanese garden, a large collection of Tasmanian plants and the Subantarctic Plant House, which recreates the cool, misty climate of Macquarie Island.
The gardens are popular for walks and picnics, with views over the river and towards the Tasman Bridge.
Getting there by bus
The nearest stop is Government House, Tasman Hwy, about 500 metres from the gardens. It is served by many routes heading to the eastern shore, among them 601, 605, 606, 615, 616, 624 and 625, which leave from the Hobart Interchange in the city centre.
From the stop, follow the path across the Queens Domain to the main gate on Lower Domain Road. Walking all the way from the city centre takes around 25 to 30 minutes.
