What it is
MONA was founded by the collector David Walsh and opened in January 2011 on the Moorilla winery estate in Berriedale. Most of the building lies underground: visitors descend a spiral staircase into dim galleries cut into the rock, where antiquities sit alongside provocative contemporary works, often without conventional labels.
The museum has become one of Tasmania's main attractions and also runs its own winter and summer festivals in Hobart. The grounds include a winery, restaurants and views across the river.
Getting there by bus
Buses along Main Rd stop at MONA, Main Rd and Main Rd opp MONA, about 500 metres from the museum entrance. These stops are served by routes 510, 520, 521, 522, 720 and the express routes X20 and X22, which run from the Hobart Interchange in the city centre through Glenorchy.
From the stop, follow the signposted road down through the estate to the museum. Many visitors also come by the museum's own ferry from Brooke Street Pier on the Hobart waterfront.
