What it is
The brewery was founded in 1824 by Peter Degraves, who chose the site for the clear water of the Hobart Rivulet running off the mountain. The striking multi-storey brewery building, with its pale stone front against the forested slopes, is one of Hobart's best-known sights and has survived bushfires that swept the area, including the 1967 fires.
Brewery tours and a visitor centre introduce the history of brewing here, and the landscaped Cascade Gardens lie next door.
Getting there by bus
Routes 446, 447 and 449 run from the Hobart Interchange (Macquarie St, Stop D2) up Macquarie Street and Cascade Road and stop directly outside at Cascade Brewery, Cascade Rd and on the opposite side of the road.
The ride from the city takes only a few minutes. The same routes also pass the Cascades Female Factory a little further down Cascade Road, so both sights combine easily.
