What it is
River Street was the town’s original waterfront, and the Customs House, completed around 1900, is a reminder of the time when ships loaded sugar at wharves on the river. The building is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.
Today the riverbank has been landscaped as Bluewater Quay, with walkways, shaded seating and viewing decks over the Pioneer River. A little upstream, Bluewater Lagoon offers freshwater swimming pools with a view of the river.
Getting there by bus
Route 305 stops at River St at Third Lane, just a couple of minutes from the Customs House. River Street at St Patricks College and River St at MacAlister Street, served by routes 300, 301, 302, 303, 309 and 310, are about five minutes away.
From the stops on Gregory Street in the city centre it is a short walk down to the river.
