What it is
The town hall dates from the early 20th century and is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register; the council has since moved to newer offices, but the building remains a fixture of the Sydney Street streetscape.
Much of central Mackay was rebuilt after a severe cyclone in 1918, and many shops and offices from the 1920s and 1930s carry Art Deco details. A walk along Sydney, Victoria and Wood Streets is the best way to see them.
Getting there by bus
Gregory St at Gregory Lane, the busiest stop in the centre, is about four minutes on foot and is served by routes 300, 301, 302, 303, 305, 309 and 310. Alfred St at Sydney Street, on routes 301, 302 and 303, is a similar distance to the south.
Route 305 also stops at River St at Third Lane, close to the riverfront end of Sydney Street.
