What it is
The cathedral was designed by the architect John Horbury Hunt, and construction began in the 1880s on the site of the city's first church. Because of lack of funds and changes to the design, it took about a century to complete, and the building was damaged in the 1989 earthquake and later restored.
Inside are memorials, stained-glass windows, including works by the Morris & Co. workshop, and a large war memorial chapel. From the grounds there are views over the city and the harbour.
