What it is
Ocean pools are a feature of the New South Wales coast, and Newcastle's is one of the largest and best known. The main pool is filled by the sea at high tide and waves, and next to it is a shallower canoe pool; the colourful pavilion along the street houses change rooms.
The baths sit between Nobbys Beach and Newcastle Beach, on the Bathers Way coastal walk, and are a popular place to swim, especially when the surf on the open beaches is rough.
Getting there by bus
Route 23, which runs to Newcastle East via Newcastle Interchange, stops at Parnell Pl opp Alfred St and at Scott St after Zara St, both about five minutes' walk from the baths.
Routes 11, 13, 14 and 21 stop on Watt Street at Customs House, a little over ten minutes away on foot.
