What it is
During renovations in 1970 the walls were found to be wattle and wicker dating back over a thousand years, and old coins were discovered in the mortar; a section is kept behind glass. Inside it is a low, sawdust-floored, turf-fire pub with live traditional music most nights and a beer garden that runs down to the Shannon.
It gets crowded at weekends; afternoons are calmer for a look at the old walls.
Getting there by bus
The bar is on Main Street on the west bank, directly below the castle and ten minutes' walk from the bus and railway station. Town buses stop on Castle Street a few metres away.
The Left Bank quarter of small restaurants and shops is on the same side of the river.
