What it is
The church was built with money raised largely among Athlone emigrants in America and its dome and two campaniles, visible from far along the river, have become the town's skyline. Inside, the wide nave with Connemara marble columns leads to windows by the Harry Clarke Studios and An Túr Gloine.
It is an active parish church and open during the day outside Mass.
Getting there by bus
The church is on Market Square at the western end of the bridge, right beside the castle and the Luan Gallery. Town buses stop at the Luan Gallery stop outside, and the bus and railway station is a ten-minute walk.
The riverside promenade starts from the church steps.
