What it is
Legend says the mound is the grave of a Milesian poet; history records a Norman motte, a Cromwellian massacre and a British barracks shelled by Free State artillery in 1922. The Martello tower, restored after that bombardment, is open to climb, and the museum in the barracks below has the guild banners, a folk kitchen and a room on the Battle of the Boyne.
The craft shops and café in the old barracks make it an easy half-day.
Getting there by bus
Millmount is a ten-minute uphill walk from the bus station, over the bridge and up Mary Street. Buses through the south side of town stop at Drogheda Bus station, at the foot of the hill.
The view from the tower takes in the Boyne Viaduct, St Peter's spires and the whole town.
