What it is
The church was built in the 1880s in French Gothic style with a tall spire and a wide, richly decorated nave. The shrine in the north transept holds the head of Oliver Plunkett in a brass and glass reliquary, together with the door of his cell in Newgate Prison; he was canonised in 1975 and the shrine draws pilgrims year-round.
The church is open during the day and free; there is a small exhibition on the saint's life.
Getting there by bus
St Peter's is in the middle of West Street, the town's main shopping street, three minutes' walk from the bus station across the river. Buses through the centre stop on West Street directly outside.
The Highlanes Gallery and the Tholsel are a minute away.
