What it is
The Dowdall family built the four-storey tower and added the mullioned-windowed manor house around 1600; the story goes that Sir Launcelot Dowdall set fire to it after the Battle of the Boyne and watched it burn from across the river. The ruin stands in the grounds of the Loreto convent and can be viewed from the road and the riverside path; the key for the interior is held nearby.
It is one of the best examples of the transition from castle to country house in Ireland.
Getting there by bus
The castle is on Convent Road, about 15 minutes' walk south-east of Navan's Market Square across the Boyne. Town buses stop on the Ramparts and along the Dublin Road a few minutes away (Ramparts Walk stop).
The Ramparts walk along the river and canal towards Stackallen starts from the same side.
