Vienna at Night: Night Buses and the Weekend Night U-Bahn

In short

  • On Friday and Saturday nights all five U-Bahn lines run through the night, every 15 minutes in our data.
  • Our timetables list 32 night bus lines, all starting with N, running from about 00:30 to 05:00.
  • Six night lines run only on nights without the U-Bahn, and three run only at weekends.
  • Night buses accept the normal Vienna ticket: a single costs €3.20 at the time of writing.

Public transport in Vienna does not stop at night, it changes. Shortly after midnight the regular U-Bahn service ends and the night buses take over until about 05:00. On Friday and Saturday nights the U-Bahn keeps running instead. Which of the two gets you home depends on the night of the week, and that is the first thing to check.

When does the U-Bahn stop on a normal night?

On nights before a working day the last trains leave the end stations between about midnight and 00:35 in our data. On the U1 the last train leaves Oberlaa at 00:13, on the U4 the last one leaves Hütteldorf at 00:10, and on the U6 the last one leaves Siebenhirten at 00:32. The first trains of the morning start between about 04:40 and 05:00.

These are departure times from the end of the line, so the last train passes stations further along a little later. You can check the last departure of each line on our Vienna U-Bahn page.

When does the U-Bahn run all night?

On Friday and Saturday nights and on nights before public holidays. On those nights all five lines, U1, U2, U3, U4 and U6, run through. In our data the trains run every 15 minutes between about 00:30 and 05:00, and after that the normal morning service begins. For most trips across the city at the weekend, the U-Bahn is therefore the simplest way home.

How do the night buses work?

Our timetables list 32 night bus lines. All of them start with the letter N, from N6 to N91. They run from about 00:30 to 05:00, and most lines leave every 30 minutes. With a half-hourly service, a look at the departure time before you leave saves a long wait at the stop.

Many night buses start at the same central stops. Oper/Karlsplatz is served by five night lines (N25, N46, N62, N71 and N75), and Schottentor by four (N25, N38, N41 and N43). Further out, Floridsdorf, Reumannplatz and Kagraner Platz are each served by four night lines.

Some line numbers are easy to remember, because the night bus follows a daytime tram. The N38 runs from Schottentor to Grinzing, the N41 to Pötzleinsdorf and the N43 to Neuwaldegg, the same end stops as trams 38, 41 and 43. All night lines with their stops are on our Vienna night bus page.

Which night buses do not run every night?

Most night lines, 23 of the 32, run every night in our data. The other nine depend on whether the U-Bahn is running.

Six lines run only on nights before working days, when there is no night U-Bahn: N8 (Handelskai – Alterlaa), N25 (Schwedenplatz – Großfeldsiedlung), N64 (Alterlaa – Siebenhirten), N75 (Oper/Karlsplatz – Gasometer), N81 (Praterstern – Praterbrücke) and N84 (Siegesplatz – Aspern Nord). The N25 is a good example. From Schwedenplatz it follows the U1 through Praterstern, Kaisermühlen-VIC and Kagran to Großfeldsiedlung. At the weekend you take the U1 itself.

Three lines run only on weekend nights: N23 (Kagraner Platz – Hausfeldstraße), N90 (Erzherzog-Karl-Straße – Kaisermühlen-VIC) and N91 (Siegesplatz – Donaustadtbrücke).

Do I need a special ticket at night?

No. Your normal ticket is valid on the night buses and on the night U-Bahn. The prices below are valid from 1 January 2026 and were correct at the time of writing (October 2026). A single ticket costs €3.20, or €3.00 as a digital ticket in the WienMobil app or the Wiener Linien online shop. It covers one journey in one direction, and changing between lines is allowed.

The 24-hour ticket costs €10.20 (digital €9.70) and runs for 24 hours from validation, not until midnight. If you validate it in the early evening, it covers the trip out, the night bus home and your journeys the next day until the same hour. All fares are on our Vienna tickets page.

How do I plan the trip home?

Start with the night of the week. On a Friday or Saturday night, look for the nearest U-Bahn station first and use a night bus for the last part if you need one. On other nights, find the N line that serves your area and check where it starts, which is often Oper/Karlsplatz, Schottentor or Schwedenplatz.

The Vienna journey planner finds a connection between two stops, and Vienna service updates show diversions and closures, which matter more at night, when the next bus is half an hour away.
