What it is

The zoo was founded in 1962 by the zoologist Hans Psenner and lies at around 750 metres above sea level. It keeps some 2,000 animals of about 150 species native to the Alpine region, including wolves, lynx, elk, bison, otters, marmots and chamois, and has played a part in breeding programmes that returned the bearded vulture and the ibex to the wild.

The paths are steep in places, but the zoo also offers wide views over Innsbruck and the Inn valley.

Getting there by bus

Bus W runs from the city centre (Marktplatz and Innstraße) up to the Alpenzoo stop at the entrance. Alternatively, the Hungerburgbahn funicular from Congress in the old town has an Alpenzoo station a few minutes' walk below the zoo.

The Hungerburgbahn continues up to Hungerburg, where the cable cars to the Nordkette start.
