What it is
Bergisel has been a ski jumping venue since the 1920s and hosted the jumping events of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. The present jump, opened in 2002, combines a slender concrete tower with a curving steel-and-glass head; a funicular and a lift take visitors to the viewing platform and the café, which look straight down onto the city and across to the Nordkette.
The hill is also a historic site: here the Tyroleans under Andreas Hofer fought Napoleon's Bavarian allies in 1809. The Tirol Panorama museum at the foot of the hill shows a 1,000-square-metre circular painting of the battle.
Getting there by bus
Trams 1 and 6 stop at Bergisel (line 1 terminates here), about 450 metres below the stadium, from where a steep footpath climbs to the entrance in around ten minutes. The Sightseer tourist bus stops at Tirol Panorama, a little closer.
From the city centre, tram 1 takes around ten minutes from Maria-Theresien-Straße.
