What it is

The church was rebuilt between 1717 and 1724 to plans by Johann Jakob Herkomer after earthquakes damaged its Gothic predecessor, and it became a cathedral when the diocese of Innsbruck was created in 1964. The Asam brothers painted the ceiling frescoes and did the stucco work, and the small painting of the Virgin by Lucas Cranach the Elder, known as Mariahilf, has been venerated here since the 17th century.

The tomb of Archduke Maximilian III, Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, stands in the north aisle.

Getting there by bus

The cathedral stands at the northern edge of the old town, about five minutes' walk from Museumstraße (trams 1, 2, 3 and 6, the Stubaitalbahn and buses A, C, J, K and M) and from Innstraße across the river (buses J and W). The Sightseer stops at Treffpunkt Museum nearby.

The Hofburg is next door, and the Golden Roof two minutes away.
