What it is

Maximilian planned a monumental tomb for himself, but he was buried in Wiener Neustadt; his grandson Ferdinand I built this church between 1553 and 1563 to house the cenotaph. The bronze figures, cast over several decades, include King Arthur, designed after a drawing by Albrecht Dürer, and the kneeling emperor on top of the marble sarcophagus. The Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer is also buried in the church.

Stairs lead up to the Silver Chapel, the burial place of Archduke Ferdinand II and his wife Philippine Welser. The entrance is shared with the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum next door.

Getting there by bus

Museumstraße stop (trams 1, 2, 3 and 6, the Stubaitalbahn and buses A, C, J, K and M) is about two minutes' walk away, and the Sightseer stops at Treffpunkt Museum right outside.

The Hofburg is directly opposite across Rennweg.
