What it is
The building went up between 1578 and 1591 as a Protestant preaching hall, one of the largest of its time in the Habsburg lands. During the Counter-Reformation it was handed to the Jesuits in 1604, and after a fire in 1723 it was redecorated with pink-and-white stucco, ceiling frescoes and a high altar painting by Daniel Gran. It has been the cathedral of the diocese of Gurk since 1787.
From the street the church is easy to miss, as it is set back behind other buildings; the entrance is on Domplatz.
Getting there by bus
Domplatz stop (lines 1, 4, 8, A and C) is just outside, and Karfreitstraße (lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, A, B and C) is a similar distance away. Heiligengeistplatz and Neuer Platz are three to four minutes' walk to the north.
The Diocesan Museum is next to the cathedral.
