What it is
The Wörthersee stretches for around 16 kilometres from Klagenfurt to Velden, and in summer its water often reaches well over 20 °C. The Strandbad on its eastern shore is among the largest lake beaches in Central Europe, with wide lawns, shady trees, wooden jetties, water slides and changing cabins. It is open in the bathing season, from May to September.
Next to it, the boats of the Wörthersee shipping line leave for Maria Wörth, Pörtschach and Velden, and the lakeside promenade leads into the Europapark.
Getting there by bus
Lines 4, 10 and 20 stop at Strandbad right at the entrance; the ride from Heiligengeistplatz in the city centre takes around 15 minutes. The Schiffsanlegestelle stop for the boat landing is a few hundred metres further on.
In high summer the buses to the lake are busy on hot afternoons, so an earlier start is worthwhile.
