What it is
The Franciscan Minorites settled in Stein in the 13th century, and their church, a tall three-aisled basilica with a long Gothic choir, was consecrated in 1264. After the monastery was dissolved in 1796 the church served as a warehouse and a tobacco store, which spared it from later alterations. It has been restored and is now a venue for contemporary art exhibitions, concerts and events of the Kunstmeile.
Stein, now part of Krems, has kept its medieval streets and houses along the Danube, and is the eastern gateway to the Wachau.
Getting there by bus
The Göttweigerhofgasse and Friedhof stops, served by line 1 (and Friedhof also by line 717), are both about 170 metres away. The walk from the Landesgalerie on the Kunstmeile takes about five minutes.
The Danube promenade and the landing stages for the Wachau boats are nearby.
