What it is
The gate was built in 1480 as the western entrance to the walled town, on the road to the neighbouring town of Stein, and its central tower was given its baroque upper storey in the 18th century. It is the only one of the old town gates of Krems to survive and the emblem of the town.
Beyond the gate, the Obere and Untere Landstraße form the pedestrianised main street of the old town, lined with Renaissance and baroque houses, while the Wachau valley with its vineyards begins just upstream.
Getting there by bus
Lines 1 and 4 stop at Steiner Tor, about 90 metres from the gate, and Hafnerplatz (line 1) is also close. Krems railway station is about ten minutes' walk to the south-east.
The Kunstmeile in Stein is about 15 minutes' walk west, or a few stops on line 1.
