What it is
Archbishop Gebhard began the fortress in 1077 during the Investiture Controversy, and his successors enlarged it over the following centuries, above all Leonhard von Keutschach around 1500, whose turnip emblem appears all over the walls. The prince-archbishops' state rooms, with the Golden Hall and the Golden Chamber, the fortress museum and the Rainer Regiment Museum are open to visitors.
The ramparts give the best view in town: the domes of the old town and the Salzach on one side and the Alps and the Untersberg on the other.
Getting there by bus
The FestungsBahn funicular leaves from Festungsgasse behind the cathedral and climbs to the fortress in about a minute; the footpath up from the same street takes around 20 minutes. Many trolleybus and bus lines, among them 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 25, stop at Rathaus and at Mozartsteg/Rudolfskai on the river, both about seven minutes' walk from the funicular station via Residenzplatz and Kapitelplatz.
Lines 5 and 25 also stop at Petersbrunnstraße in Nonntal, the starting point of the quieter path up from the south side.
