What it is
The Mozart family rented the third-floor flat of the Hagenauer house from 1747 to 1773, and Wolfgang was born here on 27 January 1756. The International Mozarteum Foundation has run a museum in the rooms since 1880: it shows his childhood violin, his clavichord, family portraits, letters and documents, along with rooms furnished in the style of a middle-class household of the time.
The house also has an entrance from Universitätsplatz behind it, where a produce market is held on weekdays.
Getting there by bus
Ferdinand-Hanusch-Platz, one of the main stops in the city centre, is about a minute's walk away, served by lines 1, 4, 7, 8, 10, 22 and others. The Rathaus stop on Rudolfskai and Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz near the Festival halls are also within a few minutes.
Mozart's later home, the Mozart Residence on Makartplatz, is across the river, about ten minutes' walk away.
