What it is
The abbey church, Romanesque in origin, was given a rich rococo interior in the 18th century. Beside it lies St. Peter's Cemetery, with wrought-iron grave crosses and arcaded family tombs set against the Mönchsberg cliff; from here steps lead up to the so-called catacombs, early Christian cave chapels hewn into the rock.
The monastery courtyard also houses the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, a restaurant first mentioned in 803 and often described as the oldest in Central Europe.
Getting there by bus
The abbey is in the heart of the pedestrianised old town, a five- to seven-minute walk from the Rathaus and Mozartsteg/Rudolfskai stops (lines 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 14, 17, 25 and others) via Kapitelplatz.
The valley station of the fortress funicular is right next to the cemetery, so the two visits combine naturally.
