What it is
Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau cleared a whole quarter of medieval houses around 1600 to create the square. The Residenz on its west side was the prince-archbishops' palace, and its state rooms are now part of the DomQuartier museum route; the Neue Residenz opposite houses the Salzburg Museum and, in its tower, the Glockenspiel, a carillon of 35 bells that plays several times a day. The Residenzbrunnen, with its horses and Tritons, is one of the largest baroque fountains outside Italy.
The square hosts events through the year, and the Christmas market spreads across it and Domplatz in Advent.
Getting there by bus
Rathaus and Mozartsteg/Rudolfskai on the river are the two closest stops, each about three minutes' walk away; together they are served by trolleybus and bus lines 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 17 and 25, among others.
The cathedral, Mozartplatz with the Mozart statue and the fortress funicular are all a few steps away.
