What it is
After a fire destroyed the medieval cathedral in 1598, the prince-archbishops had it rebuilt to plans by Santino Solari, and the new church was consecrated in 1628. It was one of the first Italian-style baroque churches north of the Alps; the light, stuccoed interior is crowned by a dome that was rebuilt after bomb damage in 1944. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised in the Romanesque bronze font in 1756 and later worked here as court organist.
The cathedral museum is part of the DomQuartier, a museum route that connects the cathedral with the Residenz and St. Peter's Abbey.
Getting there by bus
The nearest stops are Mozartsteg/Rudolfskai and Rathaus on the Salzach embankment, served by trolleybus and bus lines 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 14, 17 and 25, among others; from either it is a four- or five-minute walk through Residenzplatz to Domplatz.
The old town itself is largely pedestrianised, so the buses run along its edges rather than through it.
