What it is

Bishop James Doyle, the reforming “JKL” of the Catholic Emancipation campaign, commissioned the cathedral from Thomas Cobden and is buried inside beneath a marble monument by John Hogan. The interior was reordered in the 1990s but keeps its pulpit carved in Belgium and the Gothic plasterwork.

The tower is the tallest structure in the town and a useful landmark for finding your way.

Getting there by bus

The cathedral is on College Street, a five-minute walk east of Tullow Street. Buses along Kennedy Avenue and the Dublin Road stop a few minutes away (Kennedy Avenue stop), and the bus stops for Dublin coaches on Barrack Street are close.

Carlow County Museum and Carlow College are next door.
