What it is
William Vitruvius Morrison's design, with its eight Ionic columns raised on a high podium, is generally rated the finest courthouse in Ireland; a local story claims the plans were meant for Cork and swapped by mistake. The building is still a working court, so the interior is only open during sittings, but the steps and the square in front are a natural stop on a walk through town.
The cannon on the steps was captured at Sevastopol in 1855.
Getting there by bus
The courthouse is at the junction of Dublin Street and Athy Road, five minutes' walk north of Tullow Street. Buses along Kennedy Avenue and the Athy Road stop nearby (Kennedy Avenue stop).
The railway station is a further ten minutes along the Athy Road.
