What it is
Founded by Maurice FitzGerald, the friary survived a fire in 1414 and the sack of the town in 1641 before being abandoned. The cloister, the carved altar, the rood screen and the tombs of the O'Conor Sligo family are well preserved, and the site is looked after by the Office of Public Works with a small visitor centre.
Bram Stoker's mother grew up in Sligo, and the abbey appears in his stories.
Getting there by bus
The abbey is on Abbey Street, three minutes' walk from O'Connell Street and ten from the bus and railway station. Town buses stop on Abbey Street outside (Abbey St stop).
