What it is
The abbey was founded on the site of an earlier Viking church and the first Anglo-Irish treaty was signed here in 1169. Cromwell's troops wrecked it in 1649; what survives is the square tower, the nave walls and the churchyard, with a nineteenth-century church built into the ruins. Access is through the Westgate Heritage Centre next door.
The tower gives a good view over the roofs of the old town.
Getting there by bus
The abbey is on Selskar Street at the north end of the town centre, five minutes' walk from the Quay and eight from the bus and railway station at Redmond Square. Town buses stop at Selskar College and on Westgate, a minute or two away.
The Westgate tower and a stretch of the town wall are beside it.
