What it is
Devonport is one of Auckland's oldest European settlements, and its main street, Victoria Road, runs from the ferry wharf past historic shopfronts, cafés and a cinema towards Takarunga / Mount Victoria. Many of the surrounding streets are lined with wooden villas from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The suburb is home to the Devonport Naval Base of the Royal New Zealand Navy, and the Navy Museum stands at Torpedo Bay. Maungauika / North Head, at the harbour entrance, was fortified from the 1880s onwards and still has gun emplacements and tunnels, while both hills give views across the Waitematā to the city skyline and Rangitoto Island.
Getting there by bus
Most visitors arrive by ferry: the DEV service runs from the Downtown Ferry Terminal in the city to Devonport Ferry Terminal (stop 9670), about 180 metres from the centre of the village, and Devonport Ferry Terminal 2 (stop 9672) is used by the MTIA and RANG services.
Buses meet the ferries at Devonport Terminal (stop 3462), about 90 metres away, which is served by routes 805, 806, 807 and 814. Devonport Shops (stop 3490) on Victoria Road has routes 805, 806 and 814, and Devonport Library (stop 3425) and Devonport Beach (stop 3460) are served by route 807.
