What it is
The street was named after the Cuba, the first New Zealand Company ship to reach Wellington Harbour, in January 1840. It runs for about 925 metres from near the waterfront uphill to Webb Street, and its central section became a pedestrian mall in October 1969 after a public petition; the Bucket Fountain, a kinetic sculpture that tips water from bucket to bucket, was installed at the same time.
Since 1995 Cuba Street has been a registered historic area, with more than 40 buildings of significance and what Heritage New Zealand describes as the most complete collection of Victorian and Edwardian commercial architecture in Wellington. It is known for its bohemian character, with independent cafés, bars, music venues, op shops and street performers.
