What it is
Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg, governor of Inner Austria, began the palace in 1625. Its design follows a cosmic programme: four corner towers for the seasons, 365 windows for the days of the year and 24 state rooms for the hours of the day, with the Planetary Hall at its heart. The state rooms, with their original ceiling paintings, are shown on guided tours, and the palace also houses the Joanneum's coin cabinet, archaeology museum and Old Gallery.
The palace was added to Graz's UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2010. The park, with its planetary garden and freely roaming peacocks, is open to walkers.
Getting there by bus
Tram 1 stops at Schloss Eggenberg and Alt-Eggenberg on Eggenberger Allee, about 400 metres from the palace gate; the ride from Hauptplatz takes around 15 minutes. Tram 7 runs parallel a little further south, with the Baierdorf stop about 600 metres away.
Walk from the tram stop along Schloßstraße to the main entrance on the east side of the park.
