What it is
The Styrian estates built the armoury in 1642–1644 next to their Landhaus, and when it lost its military role in the 18th century, the province persuaded Empress Maria Theresa to leave the collection intact as a monument. Four floors are packed with rows of helmets, breastplates, muskets, pistols, halberds and swords, arranged much as they were when the arsenal was in use.
The neighbouring Landhaus, seat of the Styrian parliament, has one of the finest Renaissance arcaded courtyards north of the Alps, which can be entered freely from Herrengasse.
Getting there by bus
The armoury is on Herrengasse, a pedestrian street with trams, about 150 metres from the Hauptplatz/Congress stop, which all city-centre trams (1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7) serve. The buses at Andreas-Hofer-Platz are about four minutes away.
The Hauptplatz and the cathedral are both within a five-minute walk.
