What it is

The New York artist Vito Acconci designed the Murinsel for Graz 2003, European Capital of Culture, as a temporary installation, but it proved so popular that it stayed. The dome of the café half flows into a twisted shell that forms the seating of an open-air amphitheatre, and at night the structure is lit in blue.

It is free to walk across at any time and makes a natural link between the Kunsthaus on the right bank and the old town on the left.

Getting there by bus

Trams 3 and 5 stop at Schloßbergplatz/Murinsel, directly at the footbridge on the old-town side, and the Südtiroler Platz/Kunsthaus stop (trams 1, 4, 6 and 7) is about three minutes away on the other bank.

The Schlossbergbahn funicular station is on the same embankment, a few steps upstream.
