What it is
The British architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier designed the building, whose acrylic-glass skin is studded with nozzle-like skylights and fitted with a matrix of fluorescent rings (BIX) that turns the facade into a low-resolution screen at night. It is part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum and has no permanent collection: it shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art, photography and design.
The glass Needle on the top floor gives a view across the river to the Schlossberg and the old town.
Getting there by bus
The Südtiroler Platz/Kunsthaus tram stop is right beside the building, served by trams 1, 4, 6 and 7. From the Hauptplatz, the old town's central tram stop, it is a five-minute walk across the Erzherzog-Johann bridge.
The Murinsel, the floating platform in the river, is a couple of minutes away along the embankment.
