What it is
The aquarium opened in 2017 and follows the path of water from the mountains of the Wet Tropics down to the open ocean. Its tanks hold local fish, rays, sharks, turtles and reef corals, and an oceanarium with a walk-through section shows larger species.
It is a good introduction before a trip to the reef, and a useful indoor alternative on hot or rainy days.
Getting there by bus
The aquarium is about three minutes on foot from Cairns City bus station (platforms 1 and 2), the central stop for routes 110, 111, 113, 120, 121, 123, 130, 131 and others. Lake Street at Cairns Private Hospital, on the same routes, is also close by.
From the northern beaches, route 110 brings you straight into the city centre.
