What it is
The gardens grew from a reserve set aside in the 1880s. The central Flecker Garden, named after the naturalist Hugo Flecker, shows tropical plants from northern Queensland and around the world, while the neighbouring Centenary Lakes and the rainforest boardwalk add freshwater and swamp habitats.
The Tanks Arts Centre, an arts venue in former Second World War fuel tanks, stands next to the gardens, and walking tracks into the Mount Whitfield Conservation Park start close by.
Getting there by bus
Route 131 stops right at the entrance at Collins Ave at Cairns Botanic Gardens. Route 130 runs along Greenslopes Street, with stops such as Greenslopes Street at McCormack Street about five to ten minutes on foot from the gardens.
Both routes start at the Cairns City bus station in the centre, and the ride takes around a quarter of an hour.
