What it is
Run by the Cairns Historical Society, the museum tells the story of the region from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through the gold rushes, the building of the Kuranda railway and the sugar industry to the Second World War and the growth of tourism.
The timber-and-masonry building itself is one of the few early public buildings left in central Cairns, and the museum also has a rooftop view over the city streets.
Getting there by bus
This is the most central sight in Cairns: Cairns City bus station, platforms 1 and 2, is only a couple of minutes away on Lake Street and is served by routes 110, 111, 113, 120, 121, 123, 130, 131, 133, 140, 141 and more.
The Esplanade and the lagoon are at the end of Shields Street, five minutes on foot.
