What it is
The present cathedral was completed in the late 1960s next to the earlier church on Abbott Street and dedicated as a war memorial to the 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea, fought off the Queensland coast. Its windows, among the largest stained-glass works in Australia, depict the story of the Creation in bright colours and fill the plain modern interior with light.
The cathedral stands a short walk from the Esplanade and Cairns Aquarium.
