What it is
The memorial combines a shrine, a museum and a large archive. Around the Commemorative Area, with its Pool of Reflection, the bronze panels of the Roll of Honour list the names of more than 100,000 Australians who died in service, and the domed Hall of Memory holds the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier.
The galleries cover conflicts from the colonial era to recent peacekeeping operations, with aircraft, dioramas and personal objects. Each day ends with the Last Post Ceremony, which tells the story of one of the people named on the Roll of Honour.
Getting there by bus
Route 54 stops right beside the memorial at War Memorial, Fairbairn Av, and War Memorial, Limestone Av, with stops on the opposite side of both roads as well. The route runs from the City via Campbell.
From the stops on Fairbairn Avenue it is a short walk to the main entrance, and the view down Anzac Parade towards Parliament House opens from the front steps.
