What it is
Planned as a temporary building, the stripped classical parliament served for more than sixty years. Visitors can walk through the original House of Representatives and Senate chambers, the prime minister's office and the press gallery, while exhibitions explain the history of democracy and elections in Australia.
On the lawns in front of the building is the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, set up in 1972 and a long-standing site of protest for Aboriginal land rights. The building looks down Kings Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue towards the lake.
