What it is
The museum tells the stories of Australia's land and people, from First Peoples' history and culture to European settlement and modern society. Among its best-known objects are the heart of the racehorse Phar Lap and a large collection of bark paintings.
The building, by Ashton Raggatt McDougall, is full of architectural references, and a giant orange loop, the Uluru Line, sweeps out from it. The Garden of Australian Dreams, a landscaped courtyard shaped like a map, sits at its centre.
Getting there by bus
Route 53 stops at National Museum, Lennox Crossing, at the start of the peninsula, about five minutes' walk from the entrance, and at Old Canberra House and Constables Cottage on the same road.
Regatta Point, Commonwealth Av, on the northern lake shore, is served by many routes, including 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10, and is about ten minutes' walk away.
