What it is
The palace was designed by Richard Castle for the Church of Ireland bishops. The first floor is furnished as a Georgian home, with the 1789 Penrose decanter, silver, portraits and furniture, while upstairs tells the story of the city from 1700 to the 1970s, including the mourning cross made from Napoleon's hair. Costumed guides run tours in summer.
The basement café opens onto the Mall.
Getting there by bus
The palace is on the Mall beside Christ Church Cathedral, two minutes from Reginald's Tower and five from the bus station. City buses on the Mall stop directly outside (The Mall stop).
The People's Park is a ten-minute walk further along the Mall.
