What it is
The square has been the heart of Christchurch since the city was planned in the 1850s. Its focus is ChristChurch Cathedral, the Anglican cathedral designed by George Gilbert Scott and completed in 1904. The February 2011 earthquake brought down its spire and badly damaged the building, and a long reinstatement project is now under way behind site fencing.
Around the paved square stand the Chalice, a tall cone-shaped sculpture by Neil Dawson unveiled in 2001, and Tūranga, the central library opened in 2018 on the north-eastern corner. The heritage tram runs through the square on its loop around the inner city.
