What it is
New Regent Street was a private development by Regent Street Ltd, built from January 1931 and formally opened on 1 April 1932. Its 40 two-storey shops in Spanish Mission style, with curved gables and decorative tiles, form one of the most complete streetscapes of this style in New Zealand and are regarded as an early forerunner of the shopping mall.
The street was closed to traffic in 1994, and the heritage tram has run along it since 1995. The buildings were damaged in the 2011 earthquakes and reopened after repairs in 2013. They are Category I heritage items, and the street is a registered historic area.
