What it is
The first pier at New Brighton, a timber structure about 210 metres long, opened in January 1894 and served the seaside suburb until it was demolished in 1965. The present concrete pier opened on 1 November 1997 and extends 300 metres out from the beach, making it one of the longest ocean piers in Australasia.
The pier was damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes and closed for repairs that began in 2017; it reopened in May 2018. From the end there are views along the long sandy beach of Pegasus Bay and towards Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills. At its base is New Brighton's public library and a seaside plaza with a playground and hot pools nearby.
