What it is
Oi Manawa, meaning the quivering or trembling of the heart, was chosen through a design competition that drew more than 300 entries and opened on 22 February 2017, the sixth anniversary of the earthquake. On the south bank a long curved wall of white marble faces the river and carries the names of the 185 people who died.
On the opposite bank a quieter garden with seating offers a place for reflection, looking back across the water to the wall. The memorial is the focus of the annual commemorative service on 22 February, when all the names are read aloud. It lies on the riverside promenade between the Montreal Street and Durham Street bridges, a short walk from the Botanic Gardens and the city centre.
