What it is
The island was created between 1972 and 1988 as part of the city's flood protection, when the New Danube relief channel was dug alongside the river. It is almost entirely car-free: long paths run its full length for walking, running, cycling and skating, and the shallow banks of the New Danube are lined with free bathing areas, including nudist sections at both ends.
Around the Reichsbrücke is the Copa Beach area with bars and restaurants, and each June the free Donauinselfest open-air festival draws huge crowds.
Getting there by bus
U1 Donauinsel station sits on the Reichsbrücke in the middle of the island, with stairs and lifts down to the paths. U6 Neue Donau and U2 Donaumarina reach other stretches, and the night bus N25 crosses the Reichsbrücke with a stop at Donauinsel.
The island is long, so for anything further than a walk a bike from one of the city's bike-share stations is the easiest option.
